The making of a sporting legacy. There was a buzz of excitement at Cadia recently with a very special visit from an Australian sporting icon. This year's 2023 Melbourne Cup trophy will be made from gold mined at Newcrest Mining's Cadia Valley Operations. Coined as the horse race that stops the nation, the Melbourne Cup is an integral part of Australian sporting tradition with the Victorian Racing Club undertaking a tender process every year to appoint a mining company to source the gold for its extraordinary 18 carat gold trophy. NEWCREST MINING LIMITED CADIA Produced and refined locally near Sydney, each element of the 1.65-kilogram trophy is meticulously handcrafted over 250 hours with every curve, every angle, every dimension within 1/10 of a millimeter of the original design. Each of the three handles represents the owner, trainer, and jockey - and this design has remained the same for an entire century. The Cup paid homage to its ancestral home 1.4 kilometres underground at Cadia with colleagues taking the chance to see and hold the famous trophy. As part of a national tour, the Cup is set to return to Orange later this year offering locals the chance to learn more about the history of the Cup and its connection to Newcrest, as it tours around Australia before making its way to Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne for the main event on Tuesday 3 November 2023.
