NEWCREST MINING LIMITED CADIA Air Quality in the Cadia District The health and safety of people is not a negotiable for Cadia, and we are committed to conducting our mining activities in a responsible and sustainable manner, ensuring the protection of the environment and the wellbeing of local communities. We are proud to have been part of the Cadia District for the past 25 years and appreciate that the success of our operations is intrinsically linked to the prosperity of the communities in which we operate. A 12-month particulate characterisation study, undertaken by the Australian Government's Australian Nuclear Science Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and commissioned in collaboration with the local community, found that mining operations at Cadia have made a relatively small contribution to regional air quality. The findings in the ANSTO report are consistent with Cadia's record of operating in accordance with its Project Approval air quality impact assessment criteria. The study also highlighted metals of concern recently identified by the community, such as lead, nickel, selenium and chromium, were not significant drivers of the soil fingerprint. In addition, the study found those metals occurred at very low levels in the PM2.5 fraction and were not in exceedance of any national standard. The completion of the ANSTO study is just one part of our response to addressing concerns raised by both the local community and the NSW Environment Protection Authority. In the coming weeks, Cadia will receive results from a further two independent studies to provide us and the community with a clearer picture of the situation and to proceed in the best interests of the community's health and wellbeing. A copy of the ANSTO report is available on the Cadia website. As always, Cadia will continue to keep the community updated. Any community member with questions or concerns can contact Cadia directly via the Community Hotline on 1800 063 043.
