A Conversation with the GM Cemetery Tour Mark Dicker Blayney Shire Council Did you know Council maintains 7 active cemeteries throughout the Shire? Last Friday Councillors and staff completed a tour of all the cemeteries in the shire which included meeting community group representatives and residents at multiple cemeteries. Cemeteries cared for and maintained by Council, include: Blayney, Millthorpe, Carcoar, Lyndhurst, Hobbys Yards, Neville and Newbridge. Council is responsible for; general maintenance, interments, record keeping and liaising with funeral directors for these cemeteries. Cemeteries are mown on average once a month (increased depending on season and subject to funerals). Did you know we are one of a few Councils that has a Muslim burial section at both Blayney and Hobbys Yards cemeteries? The tour was a good opportunity for Councillors to see the condition of our cemeteries and learn about the involvement that Council has including; day-to-day operations and maintenance, pest eradication, burial coordination and native vegetation value and management. Did you know most of our cemeteries contain a significant amount of pristine native vegetation which has not been disturbed and to protect this vegetation Council has managed areas by dividing the cemeteries into active and conservation areas. Did you know Council has been working with the Orange Aboriginal Lands Council (OLAC) since 2016? OLAC have been undertaking traditional quilt patch burns in our conservation areas to manage and control native vegetation. The conservation areas are also mown and burned on a different regime to the maintained active areas, which has in turned provided an ongoing operational saving to Council over the past 25 years. Council over many years has engaged with many different parties that have a diverse range of interests including; family history, schools, universities, OALC, scientises and various government departments. Council has been a partner to many interesting environmental projects within the local cemeteries including the Glide-ways K to W (connecting Kanangra Boyde National Park to Wyangala Waters), Hollows for habitat and nest boxes targeting the superb parrot, bats and tree creepers. Interestingly it has been discovered that Squirrel Gliders and Feather Tail Gliders are living in nesting boxes at the Neville Cemetery. While these species have not been targeted in any specific project it is fantastic that these rare possums live in our cemetery woodlands. The tour found that most of the cemeteries are in good condition, however a few are in need of some work, mainly Hobbys Yards in relation to pest control. Did you know you can reserve a final resting place at anytime? Community members are encouraged to contact Council on 6368 2104 to report any maintenance issues or to enquire about reserving a final resting place.
