A Conversation with the GM Mark Dicker Blayney Shire Council Local Government Week This week is Local Government Week, where Councils across NSW acknowledge and celebrate the range and diversity of services councils offer the community. As the level of government closest to communities. councils are best placed to activate healthy local economies and thriving neighbourhoods. Councils can deliver everything from libraries, sports fields, parks, and cemeteries to food safety checks, building and development and pet registration. Did you know across NSW, Councils deliver so much more than roads, rates, and rubbish: they are a reflection of the complex communities they serve each and every day. Councils employ more than 50,000 people in local communities. Local government in NSW manages 90% (164,000km) of the state's local and regional road network. Councils in NSW look after more than $178 billion of community assets -parks, pools and playgrounds, libraries, local festivals and lighting. cemeteries and childcare centres, museums and art galleries. Councils are helping to drive a locally led economy by employing lawyers, labourers and librarians, cleaners, carpenters and carers, electricians, engineers and educators. Local government spends more than $2 billion each year on caring for the environment via recycling and waste management, stormwater management and preserving and protecting native flora and fauna. NSW has 450 council-run libraries that attract more than 34.8 million visits each year. NSW councils manage an estimated 35 million tonnes of waste each year. Did you know that Blayney Shire Council specifically, Employs approximately 90 people who live in the Blayney Shire, Orange and Bathurst. Facilitates over 500 pre-DA enquiries and issues almost 400 Planning and statutory certificates/notices each year. Provides community financial assistance funding to at least 55 different community groups each year. Operates the Library, through Central West Libraries, which provides access to thousands of books, e-books, audiobooks, magazines and more. Did you know you can put a book on hold from any of the Central West Libraries and pick it up and return it to Blayney Library (or any of the Central West Libraries)? Owns and funds CentrePoint Sport and Leisure Centre, which as of today is managed by Belgravia Leisure. The centre offers various services, including Learn to Swim programs and fitness classes. Supports the Out of School Hours (OOSH) service, which operates at Blayney Public School and is delivered by Cabonne Shire Council. *Treats an average of 1520kl of sewerage each day at the Sewerage Treatment Plant Collects weekly waste and fortnightly recycling from 3,121 domestic and commercial premises. Manages over 9.500 tonnes of waste (municipal, commercial, industrial, construction) through the Blayney Waste Facility (on average each year). Is responsible for over $437m worth of community assets, including our roads, playgrounds, sporting facilities and buildings, including: 15 parks and 16 open spaces 452km of sealed local and regional road network 345km of unsealed roads 1157m bridges 42km of footpaths and shared paths Your rates at work LOCAL Blayney Bulky Waste Collection-26 August 2024 Council News Council is providing a Bulky Waste Clean-Up. This will allow the collection of larger items and will enable items suitable for recycling to be diverted from landfill thereby maximizing the life of this valuable resource. Collection will be from 26 August to 6 September 2024. The directory was launched as part of National Volunteer Week so it also comes with the encouragement to get involved with our local community groups, most of which are always in need of volunteers and would love to have more people involved. The directory is still a work in progress as community and sporting groups submit their details, so if you are involved with a community or sporting group, please submit via details via Councils website.
